South Side Place

The South Side neighborhood is located in the southwestern part of Houston, Texas. The area is composed of a mix of residential neighborhoods and business districts. The South Side Place shopping center is located in this neighborhood. Other notable landmarks in the area include the Museum of Fine Arts, the Wortham Center for the Arts, and the Houston Zoo. The South Side was originally settled by German immigrants. The first settlers lived in horse-drawn wagons and built cabins along Buffalo Bayou. In the late 19th century, many African Americans moved to the area to work at nearby ranches and farms. These early settlers established communities such as River Oaks and West University Place.

Following World War II, a large influx of African American residents arrived. Many of these people were attracted to South Side by new housing developments that were being built in West University Place and Shepherd Park. As more housing units were built, residential areas began to develop along Westheimer Road and its surrounding streets, including Southside Place and Hermann Park Plaza. As with other areas of Houston, gentrification has affected the South Side neighborhood over time. In recent years, many lower-income residents have moved out of the area as developers renovate older buildings into luxury apartments or condominiums.

The South Side Place is a historic district located in the South Side of Houston, Texas. It was established in 1926 and contains over 200 houses built between 1892 and 1930. The district is home to many art galleries and restaurants, as well as several parks and playgrounds. Today it is noted for its large collection of bungalow-style homes from the early 1900s, which are featured in numerous movies, television shows, and books about the area. Several notable celebrities have called this neighborhood home at one time or another, including Larry King, Gary Busey, Flip Wilson, Joe Piscopo, Dick Gregory and Don Rickles. One of the most prominent properties in the neighborhood is The Southside Apartments building designed by Alfred Finnila in 1926 at 1109 Broadview Avenue; it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2005.
